Need a definition, looking for a quick biography, searching for quotes; this resource provides online access to Oxford’s collection of over 120 reference books. Covering all areas of study, this database is easily searchable.
To do a simple search of Oxford Reference, just click in the “Quick Search” box and type in the term for which you are looking.
Make your search more specific by clicking on “Advanced search.” From this screen you can limit the subject areas searched and adjust the way Oxford Reference Online searches for the terms.
Or, if you know the subject area or need a specific type of reference tool (thesaurus, atlas, etc.), you can use the list of links in the middle section of the home page. (shown to the right)
You can get more information by clicking on the “Links” tab at the top of the screen. Organized by topic, these links represent a cross-section of respected online resources.

Once you’ve done your search, the results page will list every mention of your topic in one of the indexed books. The citation will feature the title of the article, a blurb form the article, and the resource where the article has been retrieved. Click on the title to get the full text of the article. Use the “See Also” and “Adjacent Entries” links to expand your search.
If you are using the articles in a research paper, make sure to cite them properly. At the end of the article, there is a note, “How to cite this entry:” Refer to this when creating your citations.
